This is a good lesson with many twists about flexpipe: Any pool can have flexpipe in the bottom of the skimmer. Shine a flashlight down the pipe and you notice it’s a smooth bend with swirls inside. Fiberglass pools are always installed with flex in the skimmer and bottom drain.

Problem 1:  Chlorine tablets placed in the skimmer basket will swell and rot this pipe causing leaks. Problem 2: The installer can kink the pipe putting it in.

Problem 3: This kink can BOTH leak and act like a clog.

Problem 4: You can’t cut out a small section of swollen flexpipe and fit it to another pipe, you have to go at least 3’ feet away and the swelling from the tablets may go away, or you have to find the hard pipe it is connected to. Problem 5: You may be called to the job to blow out a clog that won’t blow out (at any pressure) on a pool that doesn’t leak, causing a leak in the kink.

Problem 6: During a leak detection or pressure test, all skimmers will have leaves and debris in the both pump and skimmer basket, easily clogging the leak under pressure: run the pump and clean the baskets before pressure testing. This pipe may have to be cut out and repiped from the bottom of the skimmer to the hard pipe near the corner. That's about a $1200.00 job.
